The art of wheat weaving has its origins in harvest emblems of
many cultures: British, Scandinavian, Mediterranean, South American, and others. The straw
ornaments were symbols of good luck, abundance, and thanksgiving. |
| These harvest traditions crossed paths
with my family heritage among the Mennonite wheat farms of south-central
Kansas. I grew up hearing stories of my ancestors who brought
trunks full of Turkey Red wheat from Russia in the 1870s, to start
a new life farming on the Great Plains of the U.S. The wheat I
use in my work comes from the same county in Kansas where my grandfather
used to farm. |

| In each of the pictures of my work you will see a paper clip.
There's nothing at all traditional about the paper clip, but it will help give you some
perspective on the size of each item. It's a jumbo paper clip, 1 15/16 inch (49 mm) long.
